Our bodies tell us through physical signs and symptoms, like headaches, lack of sleep, body pain, illness, they can be different for everyone. But one thing is the same, if you push for too long your body will tell you to stop.
A Few Signs of Burnout
1. Pain in the Body
When I think back to the times where I was starting to enter burnout my body was giving me signs. For me, it’s extreme jaw pain and tension.
I have been dealing with jaw pain for a couple of months now and reflecting back on this symptom helps me identify the cause. For example, I have some really big changes that are happening in my online coaching business, I’ve had some health appointments to take care of, and of course my kids were home from school for the summer which is a really big change for me when they’re not home all school year.
2. Mental or Emotional Depletion
Another sign that I have is a feeling that I want to quit, or that I’m hopeless and I don’t know how to move forward.
- Having doubts
- Questioning myself
- Wanting something new
Those are all signs that I’ve been going too long in the current situation that I’m in.
I had all those strong feelings when I decided to quit teaching. It was a huge decision for me! I was questioning everything I had done up to that point—the money I spent on a master’s degree, the years I spent in professional development, and the energy I spent building relationships with coworkers and families over so many years.
AND I was questioning everything about my own abilities. I kept asking myself, “Am I doing the right thing?”
So many thoughts of doubt and fear were coming up, which told me I was sitting in a ton of “no” energy. I didn’t like what I was doing anymore and it got to the point of burn out.
Time to Make a Change
I had been sitting in a place that didn’t feel good for me for too long. And when I changed my situation those symptoms—the jaw and back pain—went away.
The reason I’m telling you this is because the burnout still comes back if I don’t listen to the signs in my body early on. That’s when I know it’s time to make a change.
So, what are the signs and symptoms that you feel in your body? Think back to signs that have reoccurred throughout your life, maybe even since childhood. Once you identify your signs and symptoms of burnout you can become proactive towards preventing it.
Find Your YES Energy
If you find yourself sitting in a lot of “no” energy that is a sign that you are heading toward a state of burnout. Your body may already be giving you signs.
Take the time to find out what isn’t feeling right for you and adjust your course.
It may be time to make a change. To move away from the “no” energy and into the “yes” energy!
